Most Guyanese enjoy a relatively similar standard of living, although there are a few very affluent urban families whose wealth is derived from business and farming. Large air-conditioned four-wheel-drive vehicles and fine whiskies are the major status symbols. The poorest group are Amerindian subsistence farmers.
